An itinerary of lost port calls has been offset by the delicious food served aboard. I am gaining weight at an astonishing rate. Megan will not recognize me soon. So far as an engineering cadet aboard the General Rudder/Kingspointer/USNS Contender (retired) I have learned how to be harshly criticized for breaking sensitive equipment. I'm becoming exceptionally adept at taking the blame for malfunctioning water makers, jacket water heaters, and oily-water separators! But seriously, despite the shortcomings of our ill-planned training cruise, I have learned a great deal about the marine engineering industry. The sea (as experienced from no more than a 90 mile radius from Galveston) is as rewarding as it is merciless, both a friend and foe, teacher and classroom. I am quickly reminded of Conrad's quote that the sea is beautiful but quick to claim the unprepared.
